WEEE and battery regulations

What is WEEE?
The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items. In the UK, distributors including retailers must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge. Under the UK WEEE Regulations, Disconnected Energy is classed as a “Producer” and “Distributer” of Electronic Equipment.

Why recycle?
Unwanted electrical equipment is the UK’s fastest growing type of waste. Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination – harming wildlife and also human health.

We’re proud to support your local authority in providing local recycling facilities for electrical equipment.

To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with this symbol) in your bin. If you’re still not sure please visit the Recycle More website, www.recycle-more.co.uk or contact us for more information.

How are we helping?
● We mark all relevant EEE with a “crossed-out wheelie bin” symbol to remind our customers not to discard WEEE in the domestic waste stream.
● We are registered with the National Waste Packaging Database, Registration Number – WEE/BX6771YB and comply with all applicable reporting and compliance requirements for the EEE we place on the market.
● As a responsible retailer, we have met the WEEE recycling requirements placed on us by financially supporting the national network of WEEE recycling centres established by local authorities. This is achieved through membership of the national Valpack Distributer Takeback Scheme (DTS), membership number 700468. This scheme enables all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge by taking them to any of the network of recycling centres across the UK. To find more information on WEEE recycling and to locate your nearest recycling centre please visit the Recycle More website, www.recycle-more.co.uk, and type in your postcode.

Battery recycling
As a producer of Batteries under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009, we have registered with the National Packaging Waste Database (NWPD), our Battery Producer Registration Number is: BPRN11200
As defined by the legislation, we are a producer of industrial batteries. During this compliance period and over the last three years we have placed the following chemistry types of batteries on to the UK markets:

  • LiFePO4 EVE branded industrial Lithium batteries (for further guidance on the definition of portable and industrial batteries please refer to government guidance on classifying portable and industrial batteries)
Under our obligations as a producer of industrial batteries, we will take back waste LiFePO4 **industrial lithium batteries free of charge and within a reasonable time from an end-user during the compliance period, provided:
  • The end user being supplied by Disconnected Energy Ltd with new batteries during the compliance period,
  • The end user not being able for any reason to return waste batteries to the original producer, or
  • The waste product is of the same chemistry and product type as that placed on the market by Disconnected Energy during the compliance period or any of the preceding 3 years.

Users wishing to use this take-back scheme should contact us at info@disconnectedenergy.co.uk with the subject line “Battery recycling”, to obtain a returns reference number. Then the necessary arrangements can be made for you to return them to us so that we can arrange proper treatment and recycling of the waste industrial batteries.
